Objections to Pledging
Common Objections to Pledging a Greek Fraternity
Pledging Will Hurt My Grades
Scholarship is a cornerstone of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity that we take very seriously. Pledging Kappa Sigma Fraternity may actually improve your academic performance at NGCSU. Our Chapter consistently ranks #1 among all fraternities at NGCSU for pledge GPA. Similarly, our chapter consistently ranks among the best at NGCSU for chapter GPA.
Kappa Sigma Fraternity provides approximately $250,000 annually to its members in Scholarship/Leadership Awards, more than any other Fraternity in the Nation. In 2003, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Scholarship/Leadership Award Commission made cash awards to 270 undergraduate brothers in the amounts of $2,500, $1,000 and $500. An additional 22 brothers received non-cash Certificates of Merit. Selections were made on the basis of academic performance, campus leadership and fraternity involvement.
There's Too Much Partying in Fraternitites
Yes, there are opportunities to attend a wide variety of social activities as a member of Kappa Sigma. However, participation in these events is optional. Our mission as an organization is to build better men. We do so by focusing equally on the four pillars of Kappa Sigma: Scholarship, Leadership, Fellowship, and Service. Fellowship is only one aspect of being a Kappa Sigma.
Kappa Sigma Hazes Their Pledges
Absolutely not true! Kappa Sigma Fraternity has a very strict NO-HAZING POLICY that we take very seriously. Besides, why would we want or need to haze our future brothers? We prefer to build better men through positive and safe brotherhood development activities.
My Parents Won't Let Me Pldege
What are their objections? Can an Alumnus Advisor from our Chapter contact your parents to address any concerns they may have? If so, please contact our Alumus Advisor to arrange an appointment.
I Can't Afford It
Kappa Sigma is the least expensive national fraternity at NGCSU. Kappa Sigma membership dues cover your participation in a wide variety of activities including Intramural sports, social activities and Brotherhood retreats.
I Have No Time for a Fraternity
As a student at NGCSU we recognize the time management challenges you will face as you manage your familial obligations, personal life, work, Guard/Reserve Drill duties, Corps of Cadets responsibilities, academics, involvement in other student organizations, and, oh yeah - SLEEP! This is why as a member we provide time management training to help you develop the skills to be successful during your collegiate career as well as after you leave NGCSU. That said, our emphasis to our membership is that their first duty is to God, their family and to their Country.
I Don't Need to Buy My Friends
A common misconception is that Fraternities "buy their firends". Of course, is a myth. In fact, the dues that you will pay as a member cover required by Kappa Sigma Internation and your participation in Kappa Sigma sponsored events (e.g., Intramural Sports, social activities, formals, and Brotherhood retreats.)
Fraternities Are Elitist
Kappa Sigma strives to develop better men, not a cookie-cutter elitist. Together with your Brother you will experience a level of personal growth that is not easily achieved aywhere else.
